May there be smooth sailing into a bright, happy and peaceful New Year.

First Snow

Image not intended for commercial purposes or use.

Out of the bosom of the Air
Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,
Over the woodlands brown and bare,
Over the harvest-fields forsaken,
Silent, and soft, and slow
Descends the snow.

Even as our cloudy fancies take
Suddenly shape in some divine expression,
Even as the troubled heart doth make
In the white countenance confession
The troubled sky reveals
The grief it feels.

This is the poem of the air,
Slowly in silent syllables recorded;
This is the secret of despair,
Long in its cloudy bosom hoarded,
Now whispered and revealed
To wood and field.

~ Snowflakes by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Happy Thanksgiving!

O Autumn, laden with fruit, and stain’d
With the blood of the grape, pass not, but sit
Beneath my shady roof; there thou may’st rest,
And tune thy jolly voice to my fresh pipe,
And all the daughters of the year shall dance!
Sing now the lusty song of fruits and flowers.

~ from To Autumn by William Blake

Thank you for your friendship and visits throughout the year.
I wish all of you a joyful, peaceful and safe Thanksgiving Holiday.

On the Road to November

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

The Raven

“Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil! – prophet still, if bird or devil! –
Whether tempter sent, or whether tempest tossed thee here ashore,
Desolate yet all undaunted, on this desert land enchanted –
On this home by horror haunted – tell me truly, I implore –
Is there – is there balm in Gilead? – tell me – tell me, I implore!”
Quoth the raven, “Nevermore.”

~ from The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe

Fall on the Chaparral

. . . the perfume of sagebrush after rain, evokes in magical catalysis, like certain music,
the space and light and clarity and piercing strangeness of the American West.

Rock

Forest sways,
rocks press heavily,
roots grip,
tree-trunk close to tree-trunk.
Wave upon wave breaks, foaming,
deepest cavern provides shelter.

~ from Faust by Goethe

Wind Rock Wave

Endlessly, one after the other,
The waves hurl themselves
And shatter into spume at its feet,
And disperse…

Its face and body are scored
With cuts and wounds,
But it stands intact,
Smiling, gazing far out
To sea…

Buddha’s Garden

Know the rules well, so you can break them effectively.

Compassion is the radicalism of our time.

Choose to be optimistic, it feels better.

True change is within; leave the outside as it is.

~ Tenzin Gyatso, 14th Dalai Lama

In Dreams

Dream Poem

Once in the dream of a night
I stood Lone in the light of a magical wood,
Soul-deep in visions that poppy-like sprang;
And spirits of Truth were the birds that sang,
And spirits of Love were the stars that glowed,
And spirits of Peace were the streams that flowed
In that magical wood in the land of sleep.

~ From Song of a Dream by Sarojini Naidu

Pow Wow

Images not intended for commercial purposes or use.

This was an extremely photo-friendly environment, as are most Pow Wows. I went with the idea that I might not be able to use my camera, or feel comfortable in doing so, but that was not the case. I took care not to include pictures of spectators or children, and only posted photos of those who were active participants performing in the Pow Wow.

Iglesia Adventista El Santuario

The Sanctuary Adventist Church is commonly known today as the Kill Bill Wedding Chapel from Quentin Tarantino’s movie — Kill Bill. In the film, the chapel represents the El Paso, Texas Two Pines Wedding Chapel where the Deadly Viper Assassination Team (Vivica Fox, Lucy Liu, Daryl Hannah, Michael Madsen, and David Carradine) attempt to kill The Bride (Uma Thurman). It’s also the church where Father Des Spellacy (played by Robert DeNiro) was banished to in the movie True Confessions.

Ocean’s Twelve

Ocean, if you were to give, a measure, a ferment, a fruit
of your gifts and destructions, into my hand,
I would choose your far-off repose, your contour of steel,
your vigilant spaces of air and darkness,
and the power of your white tongue,
that shatters and overthrows columns,
breaking them down to your proper purity.

From The Wide Ocean (Canto General) by Pablo Neruda
