3.3 Miles

Last weekend, I moved out of the desert and back to the beach. The desert is visually stunning and so spiritually satisfying, but summers are brutal; it’s oppressively hot and relentlessly bright without relief. Additionally, southern California is experiencing it’s worst drought in almost 500 years. I have missed the water, the cool relief of the marine layer, and the coastal lifestyle. The ocean is just 3.3 miles from my new house and still, many amazing desert landscapes await only a couple hours to the east.

Looking forward to visiting all your blogs after I get settled to see what everyone’s been up to. Hope you all are enjoying your summer!

  1. The ocean would be my choice now, though it might not have been 30 years ago, when I thought I wanted a more agrarian landscape. With oceans, something is always moving, and usually several things. Of course now, I have neither ocean nor hilly farm country, but flat, sprawling Detroit suburbia, but this is where my peeps are. Also, it's simply what I'm used to now. If you can pull for Detroit (which I do, but not too strenuously), you can pull for anything, anybody. That's the short version.

  2. And what does one give a gifted photographeress as a house warming present? A bottle of Perrier? No, that's insensitive in a drought. How about a pet rock. Too 1970s for you? Humming...Hates California, it's so cold and so damp. How about a Frank Sinatra recording to take the bite out of the chill?

Well, I don't have any of these so I'll just wish you all the best. Being betwixt an ocean and a desert.. not bad. I wish I had thought of it!

But to answer my own question: what do you give a novice Californian as a house warming present--why a dehumidifier, of course!

  5. The ocean has some kind of magnetism..one gets pulled there now and then.....and after being there and then having to go back in-land, you sorta feel like you want to cry...that is the way it is with me, anyway.

  6. Congrats on your new place! What a cool shot! I never thought I would get used to moving away from the ocean but I think I'm finally at peace with it. That said I'm still a little jealous. ;-)

  7. I love the desert, but I'm a part-timer, and go out on weekends. As I get closer to retirement, I often wonder if I would like it in the desert full time. Love the wide open spaces and solitude, but as you said, the summers are brutal!

  8. I totally agree with you. I LOVE the desert and spend as much time there as I can. Home though, needs to be near the coast. The cooling and soothing marine layer is an amazing thing. Beautiful photo...

  9. The replies to your move are so interesting and moving. I'm curious as to what ocean your near. Seems that all the piers nowadays have concessioners on them so I can't say I recognize this one.

I lived behind a boardwalk apartment in the community of Belmont shores. It was when I was going to CSLB. I do believe that Long Beach is warmer then other coastal cities. I never adapted to it. Such a sexist and body conscious place to live. Now I'd give a kings ransom to live on the coast... Laguna, Palos Verdes, Santa Barbara
