Dog Days

I’ve been working with my local Animal Services and Adoption Center, taking photos of the animals for their website and other publicity, in the hopes that better photography will help increase their chances for adoption. It’s hard though — you want to take them all home, they are all so cute, enthusiastic, and lovable. Give a furry, feathered, or scaly friend-in-need some lovin’ when you get a chance.

  1. A noble cause, one hopes they will find homes, but apparently the economic situation for many has caused a lot of pets to be abandoned. Can't imagine just dropping an animal off somewhere and driving away. You'd have to pry our cats out of my dead arms before we would turn them loose...

    Love that pink tongue !

  2. Nice shots. It is sad to think about. Here there seems to be a problem with 'animal hoarders'. People who take in more animals than they can actually care for. Just this week the Humane Society had to rescue some 75 animals from an animal hoarder. Actually, while some people may abandon their pet for economic reasons, I think it is often the case that dogs and cats are considered as consumer objects to be acquired and later thrown away. There really is no valid reason to take pets out to some remote location and dump them to fend for themselves. (Something I see here in my own rural neighborhood. Many such house pets have no sense of the highway or 'street smarts'. Consequently, you find them dead along the roadside. It is just as easy (easier) if one can't manage the pet, to take it to a shelter or rescue center where they can find a suitable home.

  3. wow, I checked your recent posts - Death Valley pics are...amazing!
You're kind taking pics of these cute fellows, they need to be treated with respect.
Thanks for your visit! I haven't had time blog as before but I always visit those who leave me a comment...Our trip to Spain was super great. Good memories and some tan :)
Now back in Helsinki. Today I was picking strawberries...oooh, so yummy!
    Happy summer days!

  4. They are so sweet (i have a soft spot for dogs, in case you hadn't noticed!)

The animal shelter should count themselves lucky to have such a gifted photographer at their disposal; consequently, i'm sure that many deserving animals (they are all deserving) will find homes, as I am sure you depicted them as starlets, fearless heroes, and grand lovable creatures. If people were unhesitatingly nice to animals, they might discover an unintended consequence--they might just be nicer to people.

  5. I'm glad your doing this. I've often wondered about rescue sites - animal shelters etc when it comes to displaying the animals. Only one, a German Shepherd rescue site in Santa Monica had the insight to realize that "a good shot" sells the product. Seriously, if you were going on a online dating site, would you give them the photo your aunt Tilly shot while you were eating?

....and I love the black and white shot with the pink tongue - although I think my attraction turns towards the middle guy/girl. Sleepy eyes

  6. Give a furry, feathered, or scaly friend-in-need some lovin' when you get a chance. . . And, stop eating them. Thanks, Stickup for being a compassionate and caring friend to those in need.

  7. Congratulations on the wonderful job, I hope you can help those poor cuties in finding a home. I feel so sorry for them, it's one more universal problem in these hard times.

  9. I volunteer at rescue organizations from time to time, and even when they're no-kill, oh boy, that's not the place a dog belongs. Wonderful how you caught the soft eyes and longing in the second photo.

  10. Working at that facility is a good way to have a pet without having to own a pet. My daughter volunteered for a time at her local SPCA, writing the little blurbs for each animal to win over prospective adopters. Like you, she found that she wished she could take them all home. Definitely spreading the lovin'.

  11. How did I miss this new ("new") post? Anyway, good for you. I've thought of trying this kind of volunteer work, but like you, I fear I'd bring home a whole tribe. Well, I'd want to.

  12. Owen took the words right out of my mouth almost verbatim. Coincidentally I'm blog hopping with one hand and petting one of my cats with the other. Great post! I sure hope all these dogs find good homes.

  14. Wo Brave heart it's a good and noble cause....cross fingers for a rapidly adoption for them...every days in the world a lot of pets are killed by different ways ,just because people take them ,like a toy or a car ,and after few months , the animal became heavy in family life...and it's time to let him on the edge of the road...
    it's horrible...
Think twice before you adopt a new friend...after it's to late..animals can receive like human people ,respect and love...
I have 4 big dogs and 9 cats at home...:) and no regrets..:) happy to have this big family..
    kisses..
