Rainbow Canyon, Barstow

Off in the east an isolated storm is boiling over the desert, a mass of lavender clouds bombarding the earth with lightning and trailing curtains of rain. The distance is so great that I cannot hear the thunder. Between here and there and me and the mountains it’s the canyon wilderness, the hoodoo land of spire and pillar and pinnacle where no man lives...

  1. Abbey rocks ! And so do you...

And somewhere in that labyrinthine maze of slots and cul de sacs and drop offs and slickrock, there wanders a lone jackass, looking for a stone ledge to sleep under, near a source of clear water, no mountain lions near, chomping sparse grass where he can find it... gazing at the ghosts of lost miners who ventured into those mapless canyons, and never came out... yes, and the bones of bandits, who pulled one last stickup, robbed a stage, then hightailed it into the badlands. Must be gold buried in there somewhere...

  2. Further to Owen's comments, the gold is the photographs themselves. Unbelievably amazingly beautiful, in tones, contrast, grandeur, crispness of focus, textures of the landcape, and those amazing clouds. Just astounding, really. You totally rock!

  15. the hoodoo - it's a term, yes? I opened the link to Barstow thinking what can this girl do to surprise us over what we normally think of as a dismal place - and of course - you kick it
