Deserted on Route 66

There is no shortage of water in the desert but exactly the right amount, a perfect ratio of water to rock, of water to sand, insuring that wide, free, open, generous spacing among plants and animals, homes and towns and cities, which makes the arid West so different from any other part of the nation. There is no lack of water here, unless you try to establish a city where no city should be.

  1. So many of my favorite forms of architecture - the cabin motel, the angular glass front, and yes, I do adore a good rv! All of those things inspire my imagination to wonder what life would be like on the inside.

  4. These are great! I love the two with the moon, the angular shot, the 'peace' camper van and the selective inclusion of red in the sign. That's pretty much all of them, really...!

  5. These photos are awesome! The moon is amazing. I've been thinking about this area lately because I'm planing on driving to California in late May/early june. I saw Roy's in another photo and made a note to make sure I stop and take photos. I'm really looking forward to photographing the Southwest as well as the Mojave desert and your photos inspire me.

  7. OMG... I'm in love. (With the photos, of course !)
    :-)

I agree with Mythop... although, do you think he knows about your ass ??? He might not be talking about kicking ass if he did.
    :-)

But then, your ass kicks ass too !

You are clearly heading higher and higher up into the stratosphere of visionary photography. My prediction is that you are going to get "discovered" one day soon. And then the sky's the limit...

  8. I love the stark, linear aspects of these photos, with just that touch of red and the added texture. They tell whole stories...well you know what they say about the worth of a picture compared to that of words. These are veritable treasure troves.

    And the moon!!!

  9. Although all shots have the same treatment, every picture makes me have a different sensation. This is very good work, awesome post! Love the touch of red.

  10. You seem to know how to work with that amazing light that comes along. Right place, right time, right person behind the lens.

  11. Very dramatic photos--almost like the scary movies made there! Please don't try hitchhiking! The tone you've set seems to point to the big screen... me

  14. I was just looking at these again. In that second shot, I'm intrigued by that large stone or piece of concrete with 1917 on it. It doesn't look like any part of the architecture around it. Like it was once a a cornerstone of some stately building of an earlier era, and from somewhere else. I wonder if it was some part of this person's history, Roy, that is. And who was Roy? These scenes provoke a lot of questions in my mind. Like, is this place for sale? I think we should all pool our money and buy it! It's the least we could do for Roy. And we'd have lots of fun watching the world go by.

  15. PS and I love the Abbey quote, also. Just finished reading The Fool's Progress again. A wrenching story if there ever was one. A shame he had to go so soon.

  16. I am awestruck by these. Some of the best images of a lost America that I have ever seen. Cannot praise them highly enough in this venue. Maybe, if the wind is right, you will hear my Yes! in the air.

You should be so proud of this series.

  18. These are extremely beautiful. The second photo of the straight on shot intrigues me most. The formalism might be the reason. It's worth hanging with

  19. After you comment on my last post, I wanted to come back and take another look at these beauties!
