Shore Break

Image for display purposes only and is not intended for commercial use.

The waves broke and spread their waters swiftly over the shore. One after another they massed themselves and fell; the spray tossed itself back with the energy of their fall. The waves were steeped deep-blue save for a pattern of diamond-pointed light on their backs which rippled as the backs of great horses ripple with muscles as they move. The waves fell; withdrew and fell again, like the thud of a great beast stamping.

~ From The Waves by Virginia Woolf

  2. A nice Woolf passage! She can be so terrific. But so is the photo. I suppose the subject is doing a lot of the work for you, but you did, as we say, "capture" it. The dramatic blue-green water against the duller but interesting rocks, plus the moss--it's quite a pallet. And you've caught the guy doing just what he should, which is to look at an amazing force.

  3. The mincing green on the rocks soon to be enveloped in the rapturous bosom of boisterous and chaotic waves (how's that for a noun phrase, Virginia?) is superseded only by the stolid beauty of the luminescent sand.

  5. I have been gone from CA long enough now that I did not recognize which beach this was. Newport was where my friends and I frequented all through high school. The water appears to be so high. This is a great action shot.

  6. Love the contrast of the tourquoise water to the green algae. Wonderful capture!

  7. Great words and an amazing photo!
It looks like the the wedge, where it meets the west jetty. (west to the harbor, not the wedge)

  9. "The waves fell; withdrew and fell again" - the rhythmic sensation I get from your photo.
