Unexpected...

When I moved here almost three years ago, I would drive in different directions on Route 66 just to see where it would take me. Route 66 drops off and picks up at various points in southern California and driving east from my location, it runs smack into the San Bernardino Mountains. It was in that direction I drove one chilly, rainy morning earlier this week and eventually, ended up in a blizzard! I couldn't stay long even at this low elevation without renting snow chains, but it was an unexpected joy to briefly be engulfed in the cold, muffled silence of falling snow.

  1. Cool! A snowfall like that is captivating. I always wish for one big snowfall here. It transforms everything. There is even some kind of time distortion in it, I think. Glad you didn't get stuck in it, however!

  2. As is usual, this is a beautiful depiction but because it soooo well illustrates a blizzard, also frightening. I'm a SoCal girl born and raised. And I have never driven in snow - when it's actually snowing. I would have hi-tailed it west the moment I saw a flake.

I'm assuming you live somewhere out near Rancho Cucamonga. I've seen Route 66 from the pass, as it curves around the San Gabriel's. I want to, one day, explore it too.

  3. Snow is mesmerizing as it falls. I think I feels like time stops and only the flakes are moving. I am actually hoping for a lot of. Snow this winter in Atyrau! It gives it a really winter feeling instead of just being freezing cold!

  4. During the winter of 1970 I was driving back from Bisbee to Tucson, Arizona. It was a beautiful sunny but cold day when I left Bisbee. As I drove through Tombstone dark clouds began to appear in the west. By the time I got to Interstate 10 the sun had disappeared. Somewhere between Benson and Tucson it began to snow. Within a matter of minutes the snow was so dense I could not see more than a few feet in front of me. In less than 30 minutes there was a foot of snow on the highway.

  5. A snow storm, with the specks and flecks of a nebula, thick and gelid, brings a paradisian joy to the onlooker, who is perennially surprised when idly glimpsing the best daydreams of the cosmos.

  6. I was blessed with snow the last three winters but it looks like none for me this time. I really like your photos and I can almost feel the cold and the sensation of the snow hitting my face.

  7. Oh, lovely! I adore snow and the soft quiet it brings as it covers the land with white and light. Your images are beautiful. Hope we soon get a thick downfall like that.

It is disturbing, however, to see how you are having snow there and we are having rain up here in the north. What have all our pollutants done to our weather patterns?

  8. Speechless, the weather people are saying we could get snow in the coming days here, tonight gale force winds are blowing across much of France... Winter is here ! Stay warm and safe, ok ?

  9. Are you missing the snow? It is like living in a fairy tale to be in the midst of falling light snow, isn't it?
I can tell the snow is light as it comes down on the pavement.
I have had snow that required shoveling already this year. Maybe I will have a white Christmas. This weekend I will stock the fridge and cupboards and settle in for the winter. I will go out in snow but if I have to do much shoveling, I will call friends to come get me because I do not want to shovel all that snow. Ha.

  11. That's one of the things that I like about the west coast, the snow stays where it's supposed to be--in the mountains. True, sometimes it creeps into the lower levels and throws all into havoc, but it can be counted on to retreat back to its upper haunts where it can lay quietly, chuckling its chilly laugh about the good trick it played upon we mere morals. "Ch-ch-chains, chains for snooooow."

  12. Oh boy, you have more snow than we - actually it's raining here right now.
In Finland you have to have studded or friction tyres during the winter time. It's a law.
More of them here > Nokian tyres

Your photos are beautiful as always. Happy weekend!

  18. Your pictures certainly show the aspect of "unexpected joy." I think I'm a sucker for scenes revealing weather, as well as highways, so I like these a lot. But full disclosure: I'm glad it was you driving in it and not me.

Also, thanks for the education--I surely would've never thought of snow anywhere in SoCal.

Glad to see you're a follower at my place. I'm trying to add you, but Blogspot is fighting me (again).

  19. It's always a nice surprise! Well, at least if you don't get trapped or stranded in it. We're headed for some SoCal mountains on Monday (Cuyamaca). Hope to get some snow while were there. After we GET there that is... Hope you are doing well. Happy holidays...

  20. I love your photos. Falling snow is usually difficult to capture on film but the density of snow flakes here is amazing - I guess that's what blizzards are about.
