Among the Rocks

Oh, good gigantic smile o' the brown old earth,
This autumn morning! How he sets his bones
To bask i' the sun, and thrusts out knees and feet
For the ripple to run over in its mirth;
Listening the while, where on the heap of stones
The white breast of the sea-lark twitters sweet.
That is the doctrine, simple, ancient, true;
Such is life's trial, as old earth smiles and knows.
If you loved only what were worth your love,
Love were clear gain, and wholly well for you:
Make the low nature better by your throes!
Give earth yourself, go up for gain above!

~ Robert Browning

  1. Am not sure I'd want to be lying there taking that photo when the flash flood comes through... but hopefully one would hear it rumbling in the distance and have time to get out of the gully before being gulped by the hungry flood ? Looks like the banks have seen some higher water not long ago...

    Always a profound pleasure to see the world through your eyes.

  2. These images all bring to mind how a force or set of forces create forms. The way water carves rock over time. The way art imitates nature. The way we create each other. Somehow, I was just reminded of one of the Batman movies where the Joker and Batman have a conversation. One says, "You made me." The other says, "Yes, but you made me first." But frankly, I can't remember which one said what.

  3. Are we panning for gold today? I'll just go get my Yosemite Sam hat and be right back! Oh the places you take us, Stickup. Rock and roll in all its forms.

  4. It's amazing the strength that has sculpted this bed, the water quickly becomes an element uncontrollable , an extraordinary power ... sometimes calm, sometimes violent, it appears then disappears, water and fire elements are fascinating, out of control, purifiers and devastating .. your images speak of that potential power .. the imagination does the rest ..:)

  5. I have nothing to declare but my genius.

    (often attributed to Oscar Wide, though he may never have said it - still, it sounds like something he'd have said. At any rate, i'm glad you are fond of him)

    You are using an interesting tunnel-like effect, a means of hyper-focusing (much like in poetry).

  6. You know how much I appreciate stones.

    And yours have managed to inspire a desire on my part to take a walk up your stoney lane, which as you know is not at the top of my list of favorite activities. So, I would say that makes our work powerful...

    Inspiring people to to the unthinkable!
